Inauguration of UpCells Laboratory in Coimbra
The UpCells laboratory, developed by Tecnimede, the University of Coimbra and UC Tecnimede, was presented and inaugurated
The Tecnimede Group joined the newspaper Expresso for a cycle of conferences about the New Frontiers of Health. The first one took place on September 25, 2018, at the University of Coimbra, and focused on the importance of cooperation between the pharmaceutical industry and universities for public health.
The panel was Maria do Carmo Neves (CEO Tecnimede Group), Amílcar Falcão (Vice-Rector of the University of Coimbra), Teresa Mendes (President of Pedro Nunes Institute), Pedro Vilarinho (General Director HiseedTech), Artur Mimoso (Executive Member of the Shared Services of the Ministry of Health) and was moderated by SIC journalist Sara Pinto. The Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor, was in charge of opening the debate while the Rector of the University of Coimbra, João Silva, closed the meeting.
Regarding the cooperation between the pharmaceutical industry and the Portuguese universities, the UpCells laboratory, developed by Tecnimede, the University of Coimbra and UC Tecnimede, was presented and inaugurated as an example. The laboratory will be used to develop an innovative project to combat cancer.
The ImmunoDCs@CancerStemCells project "Immunotherapy aimed at the elimination of cancer stem cells", which will be carried out in the new laboratory of the University of Coimbra, represents an innovative approach with enormous potential and added value for cancer patients. With an investment of more than ten million euros, this project aims to develop a dendritic cell vaccine directed at cancer cells, in particular for the treatment of pancreatic and lung carcinomas that trigger an effective immune response against cancer cells.
